Planetarium apps are the fastest on-ramp to learning the sky that has ever existed, and most of the good ones are free or close to it. But they can also work against you if you use them carelessly, washing out the very darkness you came outside to enjoy. Here is how to pick one and use it well.
At its core, every stargazing app does the same thing: it knows where you are, what time it is, and which way your phone is pointing, and it draws the sky to match. Move the phone toward a star and the app moves with you, labeling whatever falls under the screen. That live overlay, usually called augmented reality or AR mode, is the feature that makes these apps feel like magic.

The view looks like the real sky rather than a cartoon, which helps when you glance up from the screen and try to find the same star unaided.
SkyView leans hard into the augmented-reality experience and keeps things simple. If you want to point and identify with the least possible setup, it is friendly and forgiving. The trade-off is less depth once your curiosity grows.
Star Walk 2 is polished and visually rich, with smooth animations that make it pleasant to browse. Some features sit behind a purchase, so read before you tap.
SkySafari is the power user's choice. The entry version is approachable, but the higher tiers carry enormous catalogs and can even point a motorized telescope. It is probably more than you need on night one, though it grows with you.
Don't agonize over the choice. Install a free one tonight, use it for a week, and you will quickly learn what you wish it did differently. That tells you more than any review.
The temptation with a phone app is to spend the whole night staring at the screen. Resist it. The app's job is to teach you the sky, not to replace it.
Here is the rhythm I suggest. Raise the phone, find the object you want, read its name and where it sits relative to nearby stars. Then lower the phone and find that same star with your own eyes, without the labels. The first time you locate the Summer Triangle or Orion's Belt without help, you have genuinely learned something, and no app can give you that feeling for you.
Over weeks, you will reach for the phone less. The bright anchors of the sky become old friends you greet on sight, and you only pull out the app for the harder targets or to settle a "what's that?" argument. That is exactly how it should go.
This is the part beginners skip, and it costs them. Your eyes take roughly half an hour of darkness to reach their most sensitive state, a process called dark adaptation. One glance at a bright white phone screen can undo a good chunk of it in a second, and you have to start the wait all over again.
A glowing screen at full brightness is the enemy of faint stars. The fix is simple but you have to be disciplined about it:

And no app makes the stars brighter. Under heavy city glow you will still see only the brightest handful of objects, label or no label. The app tells you what should be there, which is genuinely useful, but darker skies are what reveal it. The phone is a guide, not a telescope.
The strange measure of a great stargazing app is that you use it less over time. It carries you through those first disorienting nights when nothing has a name and everything looks the same, and then, quietly, it works itself out of a job. You start recognizing the patterns, predicting what will rise, and trusting your own eyes.
So download one this week, dim that screen, and go stand under the sky. Let the labels teach you, then look up and find the same stars without them. The phone got you to the door. The sky was always going to be the reward.
